What Is Triathlon

Triathlon is a hugely popular multi-disciplined sport consisting of a swim section, bike section and finally a run section divided by what is known as transition stages (T1 – swim to bike / T2 – bike to run). Races are continuous with a standard distance (Olympic distance) of 1500m (swim), 40km (bike), 10km (run). The swim section can be held in a pool, lake or in the sea, the bike section can be on or off road (for off-road triathlons) and the run section also on or off roads.

Triathlon race distances are:

Super sprint: 400m (swim), 10km (bike), 2.5km (run)

Sprint distance: 400-750m (swim), 20km (bike), 5km (run)

Standard (Olympic) distance: 1.5km (swim), 40km (bike), 10km (run)

Middle distance (Half-Ironman / 113): 1.9km (swim), 90km (bike), 21km (run)

Full distance (Ironman / 226): 3.8km (swim), 180km (bike), 42km (run)

Typical finishing times;

  • Super sprint:                                         1 – 2 hours
  • Sprint distance:                                        1 – 2 hours
  • Standard (Olympic) distance:                        2 – 4 hours
  • Half-Ironman distance:                                      5 – 7 hours
  • Full Ironman distance:                                                8 – 15 hours
